Government Targets 7,7 Million Tourist In 2011

The successfully met 2010 target of seven million foreign visitations to Indonesia has prompted the Minister of Culture and Tourism to set a target of 7,7 million foreign visitors in 2011. "2011 is powering ahead with a very positive outlook. We have set an optimistic target of 7,7 million and pessimistic target of 7,3 million," Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, explained recently at an end of year press conference event held at the Balairung Gedung Sapta Pesona in Jakarta on December 30, 2010.

Tourism in 2010 generated a foreign exchange of USD 7,6 billion, with the average expenditure per visitor per visit clocking in at USD 1,085.70. The average length of stay during the same period was 8,04 days.

Meanwhile, the number of domestic tourists in 2010 reached 234 million, an increase of 3,05 per cent on the 2009 total of 229 million. This amounted to a total expenditure of IDR 138 trillion. This increase in domestic travel pushed up room occupancy rates at starred hotels during the period January - October to an average of 50,38 per cent, or an increase of 1,99 per cent points over the same period in 2009 (when room occupancies reached 48,39 per cent). In 2011, the number of domestic tourist movements is projected to increase by 237 million.

visit indonesia 2011Wacik also unveiled the theme for Tourism Year 2011, which is "Eco, Culture, and MICE", as well as a new branding tagline for Indonesian tourism, "Wonderful Indonesia" (wonderful nature, wonderful culture, wonderful food, wonderful people and wonderful value for money). Wacik disclosed that the "Eco, Culture, and MICE" theme had been chosen to raise and generate awareness of environmental concerns on the Indonesian tourism circuit.
