Acclaiming Angklung


angklungAfter batik, wayang (traditional puppet shows) and keris, it's now the angklung's turn to be included on UNESCO's elite heritage list. The decision was made by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (IGC-ICH) UNESCO assembly in Nairobi, Kenya on 15 - 19 November 2010. The Committee decided that the angklung satisfies the criteria for inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The music that the angklung produces is central to the cultural identities of communities in West Java and Banten, and the instrument itself is also included in a national inventory maintained by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument that consist of between two and four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame. The bamboo is shaken to produce a sound. www.unesco.org
